Erris Peninsula

Are you a patient Salmon and Trout angler? A keen Sea Angler?
Then you can choose the short route to the south of the peninsula to visit nearby Blacksod which looks directly at the sea-crossing to Achill Island. Take your chance of catching any of the 39 varieties of fish that abound along its coast. The largest visitor is the mighty basking shark with Porbeagle and the blue shark in plentiful supply.

In front of the cottage
Tearmon is located in the very heart of this renowned bird sanctuary and The fields adjacent to Tearmon Cottage are occupied by Birdwatch Ireland as breeding grounds. Here the corncrake (our picture on the right top) calls out to mates and the restful sounds of a huge variety of birds are constant, competing only with the sound of the smashing waves on Scotchport Rocks. Belmullet

On the other hand the town of Belmullet is 8 km from Tearmon Cottage and is the centre for shopping and recreation. The Broadhaven Bay Hotel in Belmullet has a new leisure centre and parents and children can avail of the swimming pool and gym there. Also on the Ballina Road and just outside the town a whole new leisure complex has kiddies and adult facilities. Gateway Leisure (call 097.20002) is a fully air conditioned complex which contains the following facilities to keep customers totally entertained. Benwee Head on the North Mayo Cliff drive

A little further drive (35km) leads you to the stunning North Mayo Coast and the famous world heritage site of the Ceide Fields. The Céide Fields are the oldest known field systems in the world, over five and a half millennia old. It is a unique Neolithic landscape of world importance, which has changed our perception of our Stone Age ancestors. The remains of stone field walls, houses and megalithic tombs are preserved beneath a blanket of peat over several square miles. They tell a story of the everyday lives of a farming people, their organized society, their highly developed spiritual beliefs, and their struggle against a changing environment beyond their control.

While the Mullet peninsula is a heaven for bird watchers, anglers and water sport enthusiasts the variety of Loop Walks are some of the finest sustained coastal walks in western Ireland, with a profusion of precipitous cliffs, crags, caves, chasms, beaches and islands along the remote North Mayo coast.
