"The Erris Peninsula (Ireland's own Eden) is unrivalled for its variety of stunning scenery, dramatic coastlines, colourful moors and crystal waters teeming with abundant marine life" (The Irish Times (11/07/2009). Erris is an ancient land alive with legends and mystery to be witnessed in the Ceide Fields and the greatest concentration of Stone Age tombs in Europe. In 2009, Erris was among the 5 finalists in the European Destination of Excellence competition (EDEN) awarded for developing tourism potential of protected areas in a sustainable manner while also ensuring the preservation of the area's social and cultural heritage. From early Summer onwards the area hosts cultural and heritage festivals almost on a weekly basis.
Erris Peninsula
While enjoying the ceol (Irish Music) and the craic (fun) of the region's festivals, the sea angler can take their chance at catching any of the 39 varieties of fish that abound along its coast. The largest visitor is the mighty basking shark with Porbeagle and the blue shark in plentiful supply. The region's many charter boats offer visits to the islands off the peninsula to see the seals, dolphins and rare birds including the 40% of the breeding population of the Barnacle Goose from Iceland.
Erris Peninsula
With such a dramatic coastline and the sea full to the brim with fish, watersports are synonymous with the region. Diving here is second to none. Whether you desire an action packed, fun-filled holiday or a relaxing break inclined to more gentle pursuits and activities, Belmullet in the heart of Erris is a wise choice of holiday destination!
